Mexico

Sometimes you need to jump in head first!

Come on in, the water’s fine-
Challenging times call for fearless pursuit—
Pivot, think big, and make some waves.

Getting the campfire going at Basecamp— Cañon Tajo, Baja California, Mexico

May 15, 2020 by marty Leave a Comment

photography by MARTYhiester

Back in the 80s, we spent so much time at this camp that our rock furniture was named—
The bright red Ghowlue Mug is sitting on top of “table rock,” the flat rock on the left was the best recliner around the warmth of the fire. There was also an iconic chunk of granite called “penalty rock” which was tripped over by many a late-night partier as we enjoyed cold coronas around the fire!
Great Memories of wonderful trips with many Adventure 16 friends, some incredible catalog shoots, camp cooking feasts, and rock climbing adventures in the Sierra Juarez Mountains.
This camp was a familiar weekend home for myself and my great friend Eric Barrett, who is shown here, stoking the flames.
Were you lucky enough to make a trip to this incredible place?

JUNCALITO, Baja California Sur, Mexico

May 12, 2020 by marty 2 Comments

Back in the late 60s, my Father took me to Baja California on a life-changing adventure.

Before the trans-peninsular Highway had been completed, one of the preferred routes was to drive to Los Mochis in Sinaloa and take the ferry across the Sea of Cortez to Santa Rosalia.

It was my first time driving— shifting the gritty manual transmission of the International Harvester Scout 80 as we headed south past Mulegé & Bahía Concepción to a quiet little beach called Juncalito.

As we pulled up, my Dad grabbed his cowboy hat, got out of the jeep, and walked over to the family living there on the playa. I snapped this picture of him as he was teaching me the incredible ritual of respectfully greeting the locals before spending the night nearby.

Later that afternoon, as we were preparing dinner, Dad gave me 1/2 bucket of the fresh shrimp that we purchased just before boarding the ferry, I walked over to their casa to share the flavorful treats. The next morning at breakfast, the gesture was returned as the fisherman shared a beautiful Sea Bass for us to enjoy.

This artistic image was created from one of my first exposures on my Kodak Instamatic Camera.

Cardon & Cirio, Cataviña, Baja California, Mexico

Cardon & Cirio, Cataviña, Baja California, Mexico

Driving south of Baja California’s Highway 1, about 400 miles from the border, is an incredible rock garden with endemic vegetation seen nowhere else in the world.
Cataviña, a remote outpost at 1,841 ft (561 m), makes an excellent basecamp to explore the Parque Natural del Desierto with its nearby cave paintings, giant fields of granite boulders, palm-lined arroyos, and remote mission sites.
This composite image features two unique members of the Sonoran Desert vegetation family—
The Giant Cardon is found exclusively in the Mexican States of Baja California, Baja California Sur, and Sonora. It’s the tallest Cactus in the world, the record holder topping off at over 60 feet.
The Cirio, or commonly know as a Boojum, is a crazy cactus that often resembles an upside-down carrot.

Tijuana Bullring Fiesta

 Tijauna, Baja California, Mexico
Tijauna, Baja California, Mexico

A celebration at the “Toreo de Tijuana”… cultural spirit at its best.
Cervesa, tasty Tacos and the wonderful folk music of the Mariachis are gathered in this image!
During the Bullfight I was committed to cover the pageantry of Mexico’s rich history.
I climbed to the top of the Bullring to capture an overview of the event…
Just before descending back down, I happened to peer outside over the edge of the ring
to see this wonderful Fiesta in progress straight below me!

Elephant Seals, Isla Cedros, Baja California, Mexico

September 22, 2015 by marty Leave a Comment

elephant seal isla cedros, baja california

Protected by the Mexican Government in 1922, Northern Elephant Seals were on the verge of extinction being sought for their blubber, used in Quilliq stone oil lamps of the time.
With populations now recovering, rookeries can now be found along the remote Pacific Coast islands of the Baja Peninsula northward to California’s Point Reyes and Canada.
Huge bull males can reach upwards of 18 ft in length, up to 6000 pounds!
I was so excited to photograph these amazing creatures,
in this image a Bull pops his head up from a crowd of females.
Visiting this remote site was not easy… located just north of the 28th parallel, over 60 miles off the Baja coastline, the best access to the island was aboard a Douglas DC-3 taildragger that flew over from Ensenada.
Upon landing, transport of our gear was arranged with a local fisherman to a remote campsite near the breeding rookery, we had two days on this amazing playa.
Looking back at the shoot, seems we were crazy to get as close a we did, I remember the incredible noise that the large colony made through the night and a lesson learned that camping upwind was certainly less stinky!

Puebla, Mexico

April 29, 2014 by marty Leave a Comment

Founded in 1531, the city of Puebla in central Mexico is a World Heritage Site.
We were there to climb the active volcano Popocatépetl, Mexico’s second highest Peak.
But as we prepared to climb, the cultural distractions were everywhere…
Colonial Architecture, Incredible food (mole poblano), Talavera Tile & Pottery.
Overlooking the busy streets from our fourth story window at the Hotel Colonial…
a perfect viewpoint to capture the light & motion of the wonderful nightlife!
