iPhone 12 Pro Max Test Shoot with Apple ProRAW

January 22, 2021 by marty 4 Comments

Apple recently announced “computational photography” upgrades to their latest hardware and software releases. The iPhone 12 Pro Max adds some exciting new features to the camera functionality; among the highlights is the A14 Bionic chip with a next-generation Neural Engine. The Camera utilizes three lenses— Ultra Wide, Wide, and Telephoto. There’s a bigger sensor, a longer telephoto lens, and a LiDAR Scanner that enhances Night Mode. Dual optical image shift stabilization technology allows hand-held exposures up to 2 seconds!
This is the first time Apple has offered RAW shooting in their Camera App. Apple ProRAW is supported with additional software options for Night Mode, Deep Fusion and Smart HDR 3.

Testing the Workflow with ProRAW Captures
My current image processing workflow routes through Adobe Camera Raw, Lightroom and Photoshop. For the first round, I processed these images through the Apple Photos App then exported them to Lightroom.
Apple Photos features automatic adjustment buttons for light, color, white balance, curves, levels, sharpen, noise reduction & vignette. I started exploring with the auto adjustments and fine-tuned the sliders to my taste.

Exporting to Lightroom
The Apple Photos App has two exporting options; the first creates DNG files of the ProRAW Unmodified Originals. The second option includes the modifications made in the Photos App, it creates an excellent 16-bit tiff, but I was surprised that the files are huge— 80-90MB! I have noted some of the image sizes below the attached photos.

First-round thoughts

I’m not ready to put my Sony A7 up on craigslist yet; it’s exciting to know that I can carry such an incredible camera with me that easily captures such high-quality images— especially in low light without a flash.

There’s so much freedom shooting manually with iPhone 12 Pro Max on a tripod. I can easily adjust my ISO, f-stop & EV to ensure I get all the highlights. Once I set the focus lock on the screen, I utilize a Bluetooth release to prevent camera shake.

I am not missing my SD cards! Once an image is captured, it uploads to iCloud automatically— by the time I get back to my desktop, it is already backed up* and loaded into Apple Photos.

You can see larger versions of these images with additional metadata in my iPhone 12 Pro Max Gallery; I appreciate your feedback & ideas—

Perfecting a Mexican Slaw Recipe

June 25, 2020 by marty Leave a Comment

One of the best components of a classic Baja California Fish Taco is the crunchy slaw.

Over the years, my “healthy” slaw recipe has evolved from the traditional mayo style to a pickled preparation using Apple Cider Vinegar. This creates a fresh-flavorful blend that serves crisp the first night and then keeps well in the refrigerator for a few days to top off burritos, salads, and sandwiches with some colorful acidic texture.

You can vary the mixture of the freshies with what’s on hand—

Ingredients—

1/2 head- Green Cabbage chopped

1/2 Red Onion chopped

1 cup Cilantro fresh chopped

2 Jalapeño Chilies— fire roasted then chopped

1 cup Carrots— grated

1 cup Apple Cider Vinegar

3 Garlic Cloves— pressed & chopped

2 tablespoons Agave or Honey

1 tablespoon Cumin ground

2 tablespoons Mexican Oregano

1 teaspoon ground cumin

6 dashes hot sauce

kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

Thunderstorms over Liberty Lake, Washington

Thunderstorm over Liberty Lake, Washington

Weathering the Storm—

There was a pause of peaceful silence, a familiar heaviness in the air.

With the first earthshaking roar of thunder, the birds along the shoreline headed for cover.

Powerful wind gusts, then a brilliant flash of lightning.

Culminating with a downpour of drenching rain that turns into hail.

Getting the campfire going at Basecamp— Cañon Tajo, Baja California, Mexico

May 15, 2020 by marty Leave a Comment

photography by MARTYhiester

Back in the 80s, we spent so much time at this camp that our rock furniture was named—
The bright red Ghowlue Mug is sitting on top of “table rock,” the flat rock on the left was the best recliner around the warmth of the fire. There was also an iconic chunk of granite called “penalty rock” which was tripped over by many a late-night partier as we enjoyed cold coronas around the fire!
Great Memories of wonderful trips with many Adventure 16 friends, some incredible catalog shoots, camp cooking feasts, and rock climbing adventures in the Sierra Juarez Mountains.
This camp was a familiar weekend home for myself and my great friend Eric Barrett, who is shown here, stoking the flames.
Were you lucky enough to make a trip to this incredible place?
